Relief camps in Ernakulam close as rain situation improves

After days of relentless rainfall that triggered flood-like conditions in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, the situation showed significant improvement on Friday, August 7, 2026. All relief camps in the district were closed as weather conditions eased, marking a turning point in the region's battle against heavy rains.

Gradual Closure of Relief Camps

The camp at Neerpara in Kothamangalam taluk was the last to remain operational, shutting its doors on Friday. Four other camps in the taluk had already closed by Thursday. Similarly, all five relief camps in Muvattupuzha taluk and three in Kunnathunad taluk were shut by Thursday. One of the Kunnathunad camps had closed earlier on Wednesday.

The eastern parts of the district, including tribal areas near the Pooyamkutty river, experienced only light rain on Friday, contributing to the improved situation.

Weather Alerts Downgraded

The India Meteorological Department had issued a red alert for Ernakulam until 10 a.m. on Friday, but as conditions improved, it was downgraded first to orange and later to yellow. This shift in alerts reflected the easing of the rain intensity.

The water level in the Muvattupuzha river, which had been above the warning mark, receded, bringing relief to areas along its banks. However, water levels in the Thodupuzha and Kaliyar rivers continued to rise, though they remained below warning levels.

Vigilance and Preparedness

Officials maintained close monitoring of water levels and weather conditions, particularly in the eastern parts of the district. Despite the improvement, authorities emphasized preparedness for any potential adverse developments.

To ensure safety amid the earlier heavy downpour, the District Collector had declared a holiday for educational institutions on Friday morning.

The closure of relief camps and the downgrading of alerts signal a return to normalcy for Ernakulam, though vigilance remains critical as water levels in some rivers continue to rise.
