Protesters regroup at Jantar Mantar, defy rain and police efforts

Amid heavy rain and attempts by police to disperse them, protesters demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan regrouped at Jantar Mantar late into the night on Monday. With no electricity at the site—protesters alleged the power was deliberately cut—many relied on mobile phone torches to navigate the area. Carrying essentials like water bottles, biscuits, and bedding, they chanted slogans against the central government and vowed to stay until their demands were met.

A Determined Crowd

The protest, sparked by allegations of police brutality earlier in the day, drew people from across Delhi and neighboring states. Ayush Kashyap, a 21-year-old B.Com student from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, arrived after hearing about the lathi charge on demonstrators. “I told my parents I’ll return only after the minister resigns. I’ve brought everything needed—a pillow, bedsheet, toothbrush. I’m ready to be here till the end,” Kashyap said while searching for shelter from the rain.

Others like Ayushi Gupta, a 23-year-old Delhi resident, came prepared with supplies for fellow protesters. Gupta, who brought water bottles and biscuits, said she was moved to join after seeing videos of police violence on social media. “How can students be beaten up like this for demanding a transparent education system? I saw someone my age bleeding from the head,” she said.

United by Demand for Change

The crowd included students, families, and groups of friends who pooled resources to reach the protest site. Amit, Prateek, and Aman, three friends from north Delhi, shared a taxi to Jantar Mantar. “We contributed ₹200 each. We’re here because we need a better education system and more jobs,” said Amit. While Aman acknowledged they might leave soon to avoid worrying their parents, he promised to return the next day. “The minister has to resign, and this government has to acknowledge that they can be wrong,” he added.

The protest underscores growing frustration among young Indians with the education system and job opportunities. The allegations of police violence have further fueled anger, drawing comparisons to previous movements like the farmers’ protests. The persistence of demonstrators through adverse weather and police action highlights the depth of their grievances. As the crowd continues to swell, all eyes are on the government’s response.
