Punjab Government Distributes 4 Lakh Schoolbags Featuring CM Mann's Image

The Punjab government will begin distributing 4 lakh schoolbags featuring Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s image today. The yellow bags, designed and printed by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), arrived at schools on Monday and are earmarked for Class 11 and 12 students, according to teachers. The slogan “Punjab Sikhya Kranti,” promoting AAP’s education reforms, is also printed on the bags.

Bags Spark Political Debate

While officials argue the initiative aims to assist senior secondary students with carrying books and assignments, critics have raised concerns about its political undertones. Teachers and union leaders allege the move is a strategy to influence first-time voters, as many Class 12 students are already 18 or older. “If they really wanted to help, they should have reduced exam registration fees or provided necessary study materials,” said Dharamjit Singh, state secretary of the Lecturer Cadre Union.

Vikram Dev, president of the Democratic Teachers Front, criticized the government for what he called “campaigning under the guise of education.” He added, “A child’s dignity is hurt when even their schoolbag becomes a tool for political messaging.”

Officials Defend the Initiative

PSEB Chairman Amarpal Singh clarified that the board was only responsible for printing the bags as instructed by the education department. Punjab’s Director of Secondary Education, Sakatar Singh Bal, described the distribution as a pilot project targeting senior secondary students, with potential expansion to other classes. Education Secretary Sonali Giri noted that senior students require bags due to their heavier academic load, adding that the decision to include the CM’s photo was likely made by a PSEB committee.

AAP Stands Firm

AAP spokesperson Neel Garg defended the move, stating, “The CM’s photo on schoolbags should not be a point of discussion. The focus should be on how AAP has transformed Punjab’s government schools.” He argued that CM Mann serves as an inspirational figure for students and parents alike.

Broader Context

This is not the first time the AAP government has faced criticism for integrating political messaging into education. Teachers recalled previous instances where pamphlets featuring government schemes were distributed during parent-teacher meetings and books were handed out in polybags displaying the CM’s image. Many see the latest initiative as part of a pattern aimed at leveraging education for political gain.

The distribution of these schoolbags has ignited a broader debate over the intersection of education policy and political branding, with stakeholders sharply divided on its implications for students and governance.
