A pregnant woman was found hanging in Madurai, with her family alleging dowry harassment and foul play. Police are investigating the case.
Madurai: A 25-year-old pregnant woman, identified as Afrin, was found hanging at her husband's residence in Tiruppathur. Her family has alleged dowry harassment and suspected foul play in her death. Police have registered a case of unnatural death, with investigations underway.
Afrin’s mother, S Fatima Beevi, filed a formal complaint with the Sivaganga superintendent of police, claiming that her daughter faced physical and mental abuse after her marriage to Mohammed Ashraf in January 2026. According to Beevi, the family had promised 25 sovereigns of gold as dowry but was unable to provide 5.5 sovereigns due to financial difficulties.
Beevi alleged that Ashraf and his family repeatedly demanded the remaining gold and subjected Afrin to harassment. Additionally, Afrin reportedly raised concerns about Ashraf’s alleged extramarital affairs, which caused further disputes within the household. Ten days prior to her death, Afrin’s family pledged jewels and provided some money to Ashraf’s family in an attempt to ease tensions.
On June 16, Afrin called her mother at around 8 pm, expressing her inability to endure the harassment any longer. However, the following morning, she spoke to her family again and showed no signs of suicidal intent, according to the complaint.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Afrin's tragic death.
