Prashant Kishor sworn in as Bankipur MLA after historic bypoll win

Prashant Kishor, founder of the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP), was sworn in as the MLA for Bankipur at the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Monday, August 17, 2026. The oath ceremony took place in the presence of Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar, marking Kishor’s formal entry into the state legislature after his remarkable electoral debut earlier this month.

Kishor’s victory in the Bankipur bypoll on August 3 was historic, as he ended the BJP’s 31-year hold on the prestigious seat. He secured 64,151 votes, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by a significant margin of 19,324 votes. Kumar, who managed 44,827 votes, was unable to retain the constituency for the party, which had dominated it since 1995.

The bypoll was necessitated after BJP leader and former Bankipur MLA Nitin Nabin vacated the seat upon his elevation to the Rajya Sabha. Kishor’s win is seen as a major political upset, given the BJP’s longstanding influence in the region and the high stakes involved in the contest.

Prashant Kishor, a well-known political strategist who has worked with several parties across India, launched the Jan Suraaj Party in 2022 with the aim of bringing grassroots reforms to Bihar. His victory in Bankipur is being hailed as a significant step for the JSP, which is positioning itself as a key challenger to established parties in the state.
