NASA Invites ISRO to Collaborate on Moon Base Programme

NASA has formally invited ISRO to join its ambitious Moon Base programme, marking a significant step in U.S.-India space collaboration. The invitation was extended during the ninth meeting of the India-U.S. Civil Space Joint Working Group (CSJWG), held recently at ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru. This initiative builds on the two nations' existing partnership under the Artemis Accords.

A Vision for Humanity’s Lunar Outpost

The Moon Base programme aims to establish humanity’s first permanent outpost near the lunar South Pole. According to NASA, the project will unfold in three phases, with a focus on advancing scientific exploration and human presence on the Moon. This collaboration could position India as a key player in the global effort to expand space exploration beyond Earth's orbit.

Strengthening Bilateral Space Cooperation

The CSJWG meeting also explored broader areas of space cooperation. Both sides discussed the successful launch of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission and potential future collaborations in science and human spaceflight technologies.

Additionally, the meeting advanced civil and commercial space partnerships under the U.S.-India Transforming the Relationship Utilizing Strategic Technology (TRUST) Initiative. This aligns with commitments outlined in the February 2025 Joint Leaders’ Statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Commitment to Sustainable Space Activities

The two nations reaffirmed their dedication to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) guidelines, emphasizing the long-term sustainability of outer space activities. They also reviewed multilateral efforts to enhance the Committee’s effectiveness.

A Historic Opportunity for India

This invitation underscores the growing recognition of ISRO’s capabilities on the global stage. By joining the Moon Base programme, India could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of lunar exploration and advancing scientific knowledge. Senior officials, including ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan and U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor, attended the meeting, signaling the high-level commitment to this partnership.
