Shamli. The Asangathit Mazdoor Morcha has raised the problems faced by workers employed at brick kilns in the district. The organisation has alleged that brick-kiln workers are not receiving even the minimum wages fixed by the government.
The organisation has also said that workers and their families are facing difficulties because basic facilities are not available at the brick kilns. The issues raised by the Morcha include the lack of safe and proper toilets for women workers at most brick kilns.
According to the organisation, workers are also not being provided housing with humane living facilities. Proper arrangements have not been made for the education of workers’ children either, it said.
The Morcha has further alleged that most workers have not even been registered for labour cards with the Labour Department. It also said that clean drinking water is not available at several brick kilns.
The organisation has demanded that workers be provided medical facilities, provident fund, bonus and other facilities related to their interests. The Morcha said that workers who work hard day and night at brick kilns are being deprived of their rights.
It said workers should receive the facilities necessary to live a dignified life. The organisation has also raised the issue of a column related to minimum wages for brick-kiln workers that was removed from the government order, or GO.
The Asangathit Mazdoor Morcha has demanded that this column be restored. It has called for a revised government order that clearly determines the minimum wages of brick-kiln workers.
According to the organisation, fixing the minimum wages through a revised government order would help protect brick-kiln workers from exploitation and safeguard their rights.
