Deepti was waiting for her school bus with her father
The accident took place in Birkhadi village, under the Gohad Chauraha police station area, at around 7 am on Wednesday, 4 November.
According to the information available, 11-year-old Deepti had left home as usual to go to school. She was standing on the roadside in front of her neighbour’s house with her father, Vishambhar Sharma. The two were waiting for Deepti’s school bus.
At that time, another bus belonging to Sunrise School reached the spot at high speed. The bus hit Deepti while she was standing by the roadside. The collision was so forceful that the girl suffered serious injuries to several parts of her body.
Doctors declared her dead at the hospital
After the accident, the family rushed Deepti to the Government Hospital in Gohad. Her condition was described as serious after the collision, but the doctors declared her dead when they examined her.
The death of the child triggered grief and anger among her family members and villagers. The family had been waiting with her for the school bus when the other school bus struck her.
Relatives block NH-719, driver detained
Angered by Deepti’s death, her relatives and villagers blocked National Highway-719. They demanded that an FIR be registered against the bus driver responsible for the accident and that he be arrested immediately.
After receiving information about the roadblock, police reached the spot. Police seized the accident-involved bus and detained its driver, Jabar Singh Jatav. A case was also registered.
The roadblock was later cleared after the family members were assured that action would be taken. The incident has left the family and villagers mourning the death of the Class 5 student.
Questions over school bus safety
The accident has once again raised questions about the speed of school buses, the responsibility of drivers and the safety of children travelling to school.
Rules have been made to ensure the safe movement of children in school buses. However, the incident has raised questions about how such rules are being followed on the roads.
Deepti had been waiting for her school bus with her father when the speeding bus hit her. The 11-year-old will never return home. The incident has also raised the question of when the high speed of school buses will be brought under control and who will take responsibility for protecting children’s lives.
