Madurai's Meenakshi Temple prepares for historic kumbabishekam consecration ceremony

Permit-holding devotees arrived in large numbers at the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple premises as preparations for the consecration ceremony reached their final stage. The sacred ritual is scheduled to take place between 7.40 a.m. and 8.10 a.m..

Temple decorated for historic ritual

The entire temple complex has been illuminated with lights, while senior priests drawn from different temples carried holy water to the multiple towers (gopurams) decorated with flowers. The priests are expected to perform the ceremony at the scheduled time.

Crowd management through colour-coded passes

To manage the crowds, authorities have put in place a filtering system based on pass colours, red, yellow, purple, and green, directing devotees to specific access areas closest to the temple core. Devotees can enter the temple from the west and south towers and exit through the east tower.

The kumbabishekam marks an important moment for the historic temple, which draws devotees from across the region.
