Tesla audits Chinese suppliers to scale up Optimus robot production

Tesla has dispatched officials and engineers to audit parts of its Chinese supply chain as Elon Musk's company prepares to accelerate production of its Optimus humanoid robot following its planned global market debut later this year, according to sources with knowledge of the matter.

The supplier audits target several Chinese manufacturers critical to the robot's production. Three companies set to undergo the evaluation process are Zhejiang Sanhua Intelligent Controls, which produces heat-control components; Ningbo Joyson Electronic, an auto parts supplier; and Tuopu Group, a chassis manufacturer, two corporate executives with business ties to the manufacturers told the South China Morning Post.

Quality assessment push

A supplier audit is a process in which a vendor's production and compliance standards are evaluated to ensure product quality. The reviews signal Tesla's intent to quickly ramp up Optimus production capacity after the humanoid robot's release later this year.

The audits underscore the strategic role Chinese manufacturers will play in scaling Tesla's robotics ambitions as the electric vehicle maker seeks to rapidly expand beyond automotive manufacturing.
