Bahraich encounter: Two chain-snatching accused arrested, one shot in leg

A late-night encounter broke out in Bahraich district between police and bike-borne robbers, leaving one accused injured after being shot in the leg, while another was caught after a chase, police said. Two accused have been arrested in the operation.

Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Shrivastava said bike-riding robbers involved in chain snatching and motorcycle theft had created panic in the Fakharpur area. Acting on information from an informer, the Fakharpur police and the SOG team laid a trap in the Kundasar area to catch the robbers.

According to the police, as soon as the bike-borne robbers saw the police team, they opened fire with a weapon. Police said they then fired in self-defence. In that firing, accused Salman was hit in the leg.

Police said Salman’s associate, Arif, tried to escape from the spot after getting a chance. The police team chased him and caught him as well.

The police said that two days earlier, these robbers had snatched a mangalsutra from a woman’s neck. After being injured in the encounter, Salman was admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Shrivastava said that around a dozen cases are registered against both accused in different districts.

During the search, police recovered an illegal country-made pistol, cartridges, the snatched mangalsutra, and a stolen motorcycle fitted with a fake number plate from their possession.

Police said legal action is being taken against both notorious accused. The operation was carried out jointly by the Fakharpur police and the SOG team after receiving the informer’s input about the bike-borne robbers in the area.
