Zimbabwe vs Bangladesh: Litton’s batting challenge takes centre stage in tri-series opener

Bangladesh captain Litton Das has called on the team’s senior batters to take responsibility as Bangladesh prepare to face Zimbabwe in the opening match of the tri-nation ODI series in Abu Dhabi on October 17.

The appeal comes after Bangladesh struggled to bat through 50 overs in their recent ODI assignments against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.

Litton has returned as Bangladesh’s ODI captain after missing the away series against Zimbabwe in July, but his first task will be to address a batting unit that has repeatedly collapsed away from home.

Zimbabwe enter the contest with a recent edge over Bangladesh, having won the ODI series between the teams in July as well as the one-off Test on that tour.

The match will also begin a tri-series involving Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, with Bangladesh scheduled to face Afghanistan on October 21.

Bangladesh’s batting problem

Bangladesh’s recent ODI record against the other teams in the tournament has placed their batting under scrutiny.

They were beaten 3-0 by Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi in October 2025, at the same venue where they will face Zimbabwe.

They then lost 2-1 to Zimbabwe in July.

Between those two series defeats, Bangladesh won four consecutive home series against the West Indies, Pakistan, New Zealand and Australia under their previous captain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

The contrast between their home and away performances has been stark, with the batting described as the chief problem on both tours.

Bangladesh’s last ODI assignment was the series in Harare against Zimbabwe.

In the first match, Bangladesh were chasing 141 but were dismissed for 116 in 33.1 overs.

In the second match, they were bowled out for 234 in 48.1 overs while pursuing a target of 247.

They avoided a clean sweep by winning the third match convincingly.

The Afghanistan series produced an even poorer batting return, as Bangladesh failed to complete 50 overs in any of the three matches.

They were bowled out for 109 and 93 in the final two ODIs and lost the last match by 200 runs.

Litton acknowledged that Bangladesh’s inability to bat through an innings had become a repeated issue.

“Senior players must take responsibility. As a batting unit, we have to address the issue you mentioned, that we have not been able to bat out 50 overs. We failed to do that in Afghanistan, and we also struggled against Zimbabwe. So, all of us in the batting order, from the top down to numbers six and seven, must take responsibility and ensure we finish the game,” Litton said.

He said Bangladesh’s options were limited because the team generally played with only six specialist batters.

“If the lower order cannot contribute enough with the bat, the innings can stall. That can also put extra pressure on the batters. We are trying to figure out how to overcome this problem,” Litton said.

The concern is therefore not limited to the top order, with Litton specifically extending responsibility to the batters in the top six or seven.

Litton returns with encouragement and pressure

Litton will take charge of the ODI side after missing Bangladesh’s away series against Zimbabwe in July.

He replaces Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who had led Bangladesh during the home series wins and has continued to produce good on-field performances after losing the captaincy.

The captain’s own recent form offers Bangladesh some encouragement.

Litton scored 300 runs in nine ODI innings in 2026, at an average of 42.86 and with two half-centuries.

That return marked a recovery from a difficult period in 2024 and 2025, when he scored a total of six runs in six ODIs.

He went into the recent one-off Test against Afghanistan after recording four ducks and a single-digit score across formats.

He had also endured a difficult stint leading Bangladesh’s T20I side at the Asian Games, where Bangladesh failed to secure a medal.

Litton responded in the Test with scores of 53 and 102.

Another preview described that performance as a record-breaking Test showing in which Litton made a century and a half-century and completed nine dismissals, the first such instance by a wicketkeeper in Tests.

His return to the ODI captaincy therefore comes alongside a demand for consistency from the wider batting group.

Litton said he did not want Bangladesh to remain focused on earlier failures.

“What has happened previously can help us prepare and we cannot keep focusing on the fact that we played badly before and will do so again. Our mindset has to remain positive, and we will try to play positively,” he said.

He also described the tri-series as an important opportunity in his first tournament as Bangladesh’s full-time ODI captain.

“Really, it's a big opportunity for me as a captain. We have the World Cup and Asia Cup coming up. I think this is the best preparation for us,” Litton said.

He said the Asia Cup would involve five or six teams, while the tri-series would involve three, but that the pressure and other aspects would be similar.

Asked whether Bangladesh could win the title, Litton replied: “Definitely, if we play good cricket, why not?”

Bangladesh weigh their batting and bowling options

Bangladesh have several choices in the bowling department, which has created selection questions for Litton.

Mustafizur Rahman is at risk of losing his place after two poor performances at the Asian Games.

If he is not selected, it would be the first time he has been dropped from an ODI side in his career.

Litton is expected to return to the playing XI, most likely in place of Nurul Hasan.

The probable Bangladesh XI lists Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar as the openers, followed by Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy and Litton Das, who is listed as captain and wicketkeeper.

Mosaddek Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz are expected to provide lower-order support.

The probable XI also lists Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam and Tanvir Islam.

Another account names Tanzid Tamim and Soumya Sarkar as the expected opening pair.

That account also places Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy and Litton in the middle order, with Mosaddek Hossain and Mehidy expected to strengthen the lower order.

Saif Hassan and Nurul Hasan are available as bench strength.

The difference in the listed name for Bangladesh’s opening option appears in the source accounts, while the broader top-order combination remains consistent around Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy and Litton.

The squad also includes mystery spinner Aliss Al Islam, whose first ODI call-up follows a strong domestic season.

Aliss claimed 24 wickets in 10 matches for Prime Bank Cricket Club in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League.

He finished as the leading wicket-taker in that competition, which was described as Bangladesh’s premier List A tournament.

Aliss had also made his international debut in T20 cricket against Sri Lanka at the Asian Games.

Litton said Aliss had been effective in white-ball cricket and had proved himself particularly in Bangladesh’s T20 circuit.

“Definitely, if you look at Aliss, he has been very good in white-ball cricket. He has proved himself, especially in the T20 circuit in Bangladesh,” Litton said.

“I think this is the right time to bring him into the team. If he can learn a lot by staying with the team and contributing to Bangladesh, it will be beneficial for the team,” he added.

Bangladesh’s bowling has not generated the same level of concern as the batting and could instead be considered a strength.

The team’s selection decisions will therefore involve both the possible inclusion of Aliss and the question of whether Mustafizur retains his place.

Nahid Rana remains unavailable

Bangladesh have most of their regular ODI players back for the tri-series, with the notable exception of fast bowler Nahid Rana.

Rana was injured during Bangladesh’s tour of Zimbabwe in July.

The 24-year-old has been sent to Perth for another check-up as he targets a return to competitive cricket later this month.

His absence removes one of the bowling options Bangladesh had during the earlier tour.

The available squad still gives Litton a number of bowling combinations to consider, but the sources identify Rana’s injury as one of the significant setbacks from Bangladesh’s Zimbabwe visit.

Bangladesh’s challenge is thus divided between rebuilding a reliable batting innings and selecting from a deep group of bowling options.

Zimbabwe carry recent advantage

Zimbabwe’s recent record against Bangladesh gives them confidence going into the opening match.

They won the one-off Test and the ODI series during Bangladesh’s tour in July.

Brad Evans took five wickets against Bangladesh during that series.

Zimbabwe will be led by Sikandar Raza, who continues in the role because Richard Ngarava is injured.

The side combines experienced players with a group of younger performers who are expected to have important roles.

Craig Ervine and Brendan Taylor provide experience alongside Raza.

Brian Bennett, Ben Curran and Newman Nyamhuri are the younger players identified as likely to have significant parts in the match.

Brad Evans and Blessing Muzarabani are expected to influence the new-ball phase.

Zimbabwe will also be looking to recover from a difficult ODI series against Australia last month.

Australia won that series 3-0.

Zimbabwe did, however, push the current world champions in the third ODI before losing by one wicket at home.

That narrow defeat provides some context for Zimbabwe’s preparation, although it does not change the fact that Australia won the series.

The probable Zimbabwe XI lists Brian Bennett and Ben Curran at the top of the order, followed by Innocent Kaia, Brendan Taylor as wicketkeeper, Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza as captain.

Ryan Burl or Wessly Madhevere is expected to occupy the next position.

The bowling group listed in the probable XI includes Brad Evans, Graeme Cremer, Newman Nyamhuri and Blessing Muzarabani.

Another preview also says Newman Nyamhuri is likely to return to the playing XI, while Ryan Burl will be considered in the middle order.

Zimbabwe’s combination therefore includes a clear emphasis on experience through Raza, Ervine and Taylor, with the younger players expected to support them.

Brad Evans offers Zimbabwe a key threat

Evans is one of Zimbabwe’s main players to watch in the contest.

He has taken 44 wickets in 2026 and is nine wickets behind England’s Jofra Archer on the year’s wicket tally.

In Zimbabwe’s most recent ODI, against Australia, Evans returned figures of 4 for 47.

He has been Zimbabwe’s highest wicket-taker in the format this year.

Evans has taken nine wickets against Australia and five against Bangladesh in July.

His performances have extended beyond ODIs, as he has also been effective in Tests and T20Is after returning from injury this year.

The new ball could therefore be an important contest between Zimbabwe’s Evans and Muzarabani and a Bangladesh batting order that has struggled to last through full innings.

Bangladesh’s top order will need to negotiate Zimbabwe’s early attack before the lower order can contribute to the innings.

Abu Dhabi conditions and venue history

The match will be played at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Pitches in Abu Dhabi have generally been slow in day-night contests.

The team batting first has averaged 266 in the last five ODIs at the venue.

Four of those five matches were won by the side batting first.

Heat and humidity are expected to be major factors in Abu Dhabi.

Mosaddek Hossain said Bangladesh’s Test players had adjusted to the heat reasonably well and that the team had trained at the venue for a few days.

“Our Test players adjusted to the heat pretty well. We have trained for a few days here so we hope there will be a bit of breeze in the evening, since the matches will start in the late afternoon,” Mosaddek said.

Bangladesh have played six ODIs at the Abu Dhabi venue and won two of them.

Zimbabwe will play their first ODI at the Zayed Cricket Stadium.

The match will also be the first Bangladesh-Zimbabwe ODI at a neutral venue in 20 years.

The last such meeting took place in Jaipur during the Champions Trophy in 2006.

The venue record gives Bangladesh some familiarity, but it does not erase the team’s recent problems in Abu Dhabi against Afghanistan or its latest series defeat to Zimbabwe.

A rare neutral meeting

The contest carries a longer statistical context because Bangladesh and Zimbabwe have not met in an ODI at a neutral venue for two decades.

That makes Abu Dhabi a different setting from the July series in Zimbabwe, where the hosts won 2-1.

Zimbabwe’s lack of ODI experience at the Zayed Cricket Stadium is another factor in the venue comparison.

Bangladesh’s two wins in six ODIs at the ground give them a record to draw on, although the sources do not describe that record as a guarantee for the new contest.

Brendan Taylor remains the highest run-scorer among the active players from both teams in this match.

Taylor last played an ODI against Bangladesh in 2021.

His presence gives Zimbabwe an experienced batter who has already been identified as a notable figure in the match’s statistical background.

What Bangladesh need from the senior batters

The immediate requirement for Bangladesh is not simply a strong start but an innings that reaches its intended length.

The team failed to bat out 50 overs in any match of the recent ODI series against Afghanistan.

It also failed to complete its innings in two of the three matches against Zimbabwe before winning the final game.

Litton has asked the senior players to absorb responsibility from the top of the order through numbers six and seven.

That demand places pressure on Litton himself, along with Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Mosaddek Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

At the same time, Litton’s ODI returns in 2026 provide evidence that he has moved away from the six-run total recorded across six ODIs in 2024 and 2025.

The opening pair will also be important because Bangladesh’s probable combinations begin with Tanzid Hasan or Tanzid Tamim alongside Soumya Sarkar.

The sources identify Bangladesh’s batting depth on paper but also point to a recurring problem with consistency.

The lower order has been asked to contribute because the side generally operates with only six specialist batters.

If those lower-order runs do not arrive, Litton said, the innings can stall and place additional pressure on the specialist batters.

The wider tri-series objective

Bangladesh are not treating the match only as an opportunity to reverse their recent results against Zimbabwe.

Mosaddek Hossain said Bangladesh wanted to win the tri-series and would need to win both round-robin matches against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan to do so.

“We want to win the trophy, definitely, but to do that, we have to win both the (round-robin) matches against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan,” Mosaddek said.

Litton also linked the tournament to Bangladesh’s preparations for the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup.

He described the tri-series as a chance to win silverware and build momentum ahead of those events.

The first match therefore brings together Bangladesh’s need for immediate batting repair and its broader preparation plans under a new full-time ODI captain.

Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will seek to extend their recent dominance over Bangladesh after winning the Test and ODI series in July, while recovering from their 3-0 loss to Australia.

The balance between those two recent records leaves Bangladesh with a clear task: convert Litton’s call for positive cricket into a complete batting performance.

Litton’s own assessment was direct: “Definitely, if we play good cricket, why not?”
