The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has announced that all encroachments on Kochi's Pipeline Road must be cleared within a week to ensure smooth movement for pedestrians and motorists. The directive follows an inspection of the stretch, which revealed multiple obstructions, including garden pots and other structures placed on the road.

The KWA has begun issuing notices to individuals responsible for the encroachments, warning that failure to comply within the stipulated time will lead to legal and police action. Rathish Kumar S., the superintending engineer of KWA, stated in a release that survey stones will soon be laid along the corridor in collaboration with the district administration to demarcate boundaries clearly.

This removal drive is part of preparations for a major infrastructure project—the laying of pipelines to supply water to Kochi from a proposed 190-million-liters-per-day (mld) water treatment plant. The authorities aim to ensure the road is free of obstacles before the work begins, facilitating smooth execution of the project.

Encroachments on public roads have long been a concern in Kochi, often causing inconvenience and safety risks for commuters. The KWA’s decision to act decisively is expected to improve road accessibility and pave the way for better water infrastructure in the city.

The move signals a firm stance against unauthorized use of public spaces and underscores the importance of infrastructure development in addressing Kochi’s growing urban needs. Residents and businesses along the Pipeline Road are advised to cooperate with the authorities to avoid penalties and ensure timely progress of the project.
