Kasaragod Solar Park Phase II Approved With 50 MW Battery Storage
MNRE approves a 50 MW/100 MWh battery system for Kasaragod Solar Park Phase II to support Kerala's peak-hour power demand.
Keralam’s 100 MW Kasaragod solar park to have battery energy storage system
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has approved a revised detailed project report (DPR) for Phase II of the 100 MW Kasaragod Solar Park, incorporating a battery energy storage system.
The revised DPR was approved in April, 2026, after the MNRE had approved the establishment of the solar park’s second phase on February 1, 2024.
The project is located at Cheemeni in Kasaragod district.
The battery system is being added to help Keralam address its power shortage during evening-hour peak demand.
The second phase will have a 50 MW/100 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) alongside the solar power plant.
The decision to include the BESS was taken by the MNRE.
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), in its June 2026 ‘Status Report on Development of Solar Parks/Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Parks in the Country,’ noted the reason for the addition.
“In view of the acute power shortage in Keralam during the peak demand period, a 50 MW BESS is proposed alongside a 100 MW solar power plant,” the CEA observed.
The report also stated, “The KSEB has approved floating a tender for 50 MW with two-hour BESS.”
The MW rating refers to the maximum amount of power that a BESS can deliver at a given moment.
The MWh figure indicates the total amount of energy that the system can store.
The 50 MW/100 MWh configuration therefore specifies both the system’s power-delivery capacity and its storage capacity.
The BESS planned alongside Kasaragod Solar Park Phase-II will also complement five other BESS projects under development by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).
Those projects are intended to tap the surge in Keralam’s solar power capacity.
As per the sanctioned DPR, all activities related to the solar project are to be completed on or before April 6, 2028.
Monitoring committee for Phase II
The KSEB has constituted a monitoring committee to oversee the implementation and progress of Phase II of the solar park project.
The committee has eight members and is headed by the Power Secretary.
Senior officials of the KSEB and the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (Anert) are also members of the panel.
The Chief Executive Officer of Renewable Power Corporation of Kerala Limited (RPCKL) is the convener of the committee.
The committee’s remit covers the implementation and progress of the second phase, which now includes the BESS component approved through the revised DPR.
Other BESS projects under development
The KSEB is currently developing BESS projects at Mylatty and Mulleria in Kasaragod district.
Other projects are being developed at Areacode in Malappuram, Sreekandapuram in Kannur, and Pothencode in Thiruvananthapuram.
These five projects are expected to be ready by the end of the year.
Together with the BESS planned for Kasaragod Solar Park Phase-II, they form part of the storage capacity being developed alongside Keralam’s expanding solar power capacity.
