From Doctor to Astronaut: Indian-American Anil Menon Set for Mission Aboard ISS

Nasa astronaut Anil Menon, an Indian-American physician, engineer, and military officer, is gearing up for a landmark mission that will see him spend approximately 240 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Menon is scheduled to launch on July 14, 2026, aboard the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome. Joining him on this eight-month journey will be Roscosmos cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina.

The crew is expected to return to Earth in the spring of 2027, marking the culmination of Menon’s maiden space voyage. This mission represents the pinnacle of his distinguished career, which spans science, technology, military service, and space exploration. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to immigrant parents from India and Ukraine, Menon’s journey to becoming an astronaut has been marked by academic excellence and professional achievements.

Menon holds a bachelor’s degree in neurobiology from Harvard University and later earned his medical degree and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University. His training continued with residencies in emergency medicine and aerospace medicine, leading to board certifications in both fields. Prior to his astronaut candidacy, Menon worked as a Nasa expedition flight surgeon, supporting astronauts aboard the ISS.

His expertise extended to commercial spaceflight, where he played a pivotal role at SpaceX as the company’s first flight surgeon. Menon contributed to astronaut medical systems development and assisted in the Demo-2 mission. He also underwent training in Star City, Russia, to support Soyuz missions.

Selected by Nasa as an astronaut candidate in 2021, Menon completed his two-year training program in 2024. Since then, he has been preparing for his first space assignment. While aboard the ISS, Menon will conduct experiments aimed at advancing lunar and Martian exploration. These studies will focus on how microgravity impacts blood flow, vein structure, and blood composition in astronauts.

Additionally, Menon will help test technologies for producing intravenous fluids using the station’s potable water system—a capability that could prove crucial for deep-space missions with limited medical supplies. Beyond his scientific expertise, Menon is a seasoned aviator with over 1,000 hours of flying experience. He is also a certified flight instructor and has participated in endurance challenges like Ironman competitions and the Kokoro challenge.

Menon’s connection to spaceflight extends to his personal life. He is married to Anna Menon, a SpaceX employee who has contributed to several human spaceflight missions. The couple has two children.
