Huanggang Port's New Checkpoint Highlights Hong Kong-Shenzhen Connection

The newly redesigned Huanggang Port checkpoint in Shenzhen has unveiled a striking architectural design inspired by the shared geological and historical ties between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. The facility, which adopts a modern "joint inspection" model, symbolises the enduring connection between the two cities, according to its architects.

A Monument to Shared History

Huanggang Port, located at the edge of Shenzhen’s Futian district, features a pale brown, rounded facade that resembles a giant cornerstone. This design draws from the ancient volcanic area that once united the lands of Hong Kong and Shenzhen before they evolved into bustling urban centres separated by borders.

Keith Griffiths, founder and chairman of global architectural firm Aedas, explained the concept behind the structure: “Huanggang represents the cornerstone of the relationship between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and that translates immediately into the shape and form of the building.”

Why It Matters

The revamped checkpoint is more than just a border crossing—it symbolises the deep-rooted ties between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, spanning natural history and modern technological collaboration. By adopting the "joint inspection" model, it aims to streamline border procedures and enhance connectivity between the cities. This development comes as Hong Kong assumes jurisdiction over its section of the facility and continues preparations for its opening.

Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung inspected the facilities on Friday, underscoring the significance of the project for Hong Kong’s integration with its mainland counterpart.
