For the first time, Hong Kong yacht owners are navigating mainland waters under a groundbreaking travel scheme that promises to unlock new leisure and economic opportunities. Earlier this month, veteran sailor Thomas Wong Kam-chuen and his partners embarked on a two-day voyage to Guishan Island in Zhuhai, marking a milestone in cross-border marine travel. Their Danish-built yacht, DBX2, was part of a flotilla organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and the Zhuhai Yacht Association, testing the waters of the newly approved Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau individual yacht scheme.

A New Chapter in Leisure Sailing

The trip, which began at the Causeway Bay typhoon shelter, took five hours to reach Guishan Island. Wong and his group enjoyed a seafood lunch ashore, costing just HK$112 per person—a stark contrast to Hong Kong’s prices, which can range from HK$600 to HK$700 for similar meals. “Food is really economical,” said Wong, who has over five decades of sailing experience. The group stayed overnight before returning, showcasing the ease of leisure travel under the new framework.

Beijing’s Push for a "Yacht Economy"

The individual yacht scheme, approved by Beijing in June, allows Hong Kong yacht owners to sail to designated mainland ports. It is part of a broader strategy to develop a "yacht economy" within the Greater Bay Area, a central government initiative aimed at integrating Hong Kong, Macau, and nine cities in Guangdong province into a unified economic zone. The scheme is designed to foster cross-border tourism and leisure while boosting marine-related industries.

Infrastructure Challenges for Hong Kong

While the scheme opens new doors, maritime experts and boat owners stress that Hong Kong must upgrade its marine infrastructure to fully capitalize on these opportunities. Enhanced facilities could attract more mainland yachts and establish the city as a hub for marine tourism within the Greater Bay Area. Without such investments, Hong Kong risks losing out on the economic benefits of this burgeoning sector.
