Hong Kong and Macau Not Rivals in Tourism, Say Industry Leaders

Hong Kong and Macau can complement each other in tourism development rather than compete, according to officials and industry leaders in Macau, as the city continues its long-standing push for economic diversification.

Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of the Macau Government Tourism Office, emphasized that the two cities have collaborated for years to attract international visitors and should focus on strengthening this partnership instead of viewing each other as competitors.

Ahead of the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) tourism ministers’ meeting in Macau, Fernandes highlighted the unique experiences offered by both cities. She stated that by leveraging their respective strengths, Hong Kong and Macau could benefit from shared visitor flows.

Fernandes also pointed out the strategic importance of Hong Kong International Airport as a key transport hub for the Greater Bay Area. She noted that the 2018 opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge has significantly enhanced regional connectivity, making multi-destination travel more convenient. “We should continue thinking about how to make better use of everyone’s resources and tell the Greater Bay Area story well,” she said during a media briefing in Macau.

Additionally, she stressed the importance of Macau collaborating not only with the Hong Kong Tourism Board but also with Hong Kong’s broader tourism industry to maximize mutual benefits.
