Cyberabad police plan bus diversions and U-turn closures to ease JNTU-HITEC gridlock

Cyberabad traffic police have placed a range of infrastructure and operational interventions on the table, including rerouting city buses, shutting specific U-turns and building a pedestrian underpass, in a bid to untangle chronic gridlock between JNTU Junction and HITEC City.

Cyberabad Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunpreet Singh convened a coordination meeting to review traffic conditions along the corridor, which takes in Wipro Junction and the stretch from Botanical Garden towards AMB Mall. Additional DCP (Traffic-I), ACP (Madhapur Traffic) and traffic advisor Prashanth joined the discussion, which examined existing traffic flow, bottlenecks and conflict points before turning to potential management and engineering remedies.

Bus diversion and U-turn closures under review

One option on the table is diverting RTC bus services currently running between JNTU Junction and HITEC City, with the aim of cutting vehicle volumes on the congested route. Officials also looked at closing select U-turns to reduce cross-movements and improve vehicle flow.

The meeting assessed the number and location of openings and access points on both sides of the main carriageway, particularly their impact on merging and weaving traffic. A proposal for a pedestrian underpass at JNTU Junction was discussed to enable safer pedestrian movement and reduce pedestrian-vehicle conflicts at the busy intersection.

Drone footage guides Wipro Junction analysis

At Wipro Junction and surrounding stretches, officials studied drone footage to understand traffic movement, accumulation points, merging areas and bottlenecks, and discussed possible measures to improve circulation and reduce congestion based on those observations. The Botanical Garden-AMB Mall corridor, including the Kothaguda Flyover and its approaches, also came under review, with officials discussing measures to regulate traffic flow and address bottlenecks along the stretch.

The meeting concluded with plans for further field-level studies and traffic-flow analysis before deciding on the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed measures. The interventions are aimed at ensuring smoother and safer movement of vehicles and pedestrians along the JNTU-HITEC City and adjoining corridors.
