Guangdong Struggles to Retain AI Talent Amidst Fierce Competition

Guangdong province is ramping up efforts to retain and attract artificial intelligence (AI) talent after losing top innovators to rival regions. The southern Chinese province, home to major cities like Guangzhou and Shenzhen, faces stiff competition from cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou, which have become hubs for leading AI companies.

AI Leaders Choose Other Regions

Prominent AI entrepreneurs Yang and Liang, founders of Moonshot and DeepSeek respectively, exemplify Guangdong's talent retention challenge. Yang, after earning his PhD at Carnegie Mellon University, returned to China but chose Beijing to launch Moonshot in 2023. Liang, who studied at Zhejiang University and spent time in Sichuan, ultimately settled in Hangzhou to establish both his quantitative hedge fund and DeepSeek.

This trend underscores Guangdong’s struggle to compete with cities like Beijing, which hosts 19 of China’s top 50 AI companies, and Shanghai, home to 14. In contrast, Guangzhou and Shenzhen together account for just 10, according to the Hurun Research Institute.

Academic Talent Drives Regional Disparities

Experts attribute Guangdong's challenges to the uneven distribution of academic talent. Cities like Hangzhou, which boasts thriving firms such as DeepSeek and Unitree Robotics, and second-tier cities like Hefei and Wuhan, which are building semiconductor giants, are increasingly attractive to AI innovators. Guangdong, despite its economic clout, has yet to match the academic and research ecosystems of these emerging hubs.

As competition intensifies, Guangdong’s ability to foster a supportive environment for AI talent will be critical in shaping its future role in China's AI landscape.
