Billava Brigade proposes statue for freedom fighter Ubar Manja Baidya

The Billava Brigade, a newly formed organization in Puttur aimed at advancing the Billava community, has announced its first major initiative: the installation of a statue honoring freedom fighter Ubar Manja Baidya in Uppinangady, Karnataka. The group recently submitted a memorandum to MLA Ashok Kumar Rai, urging the government to support this proposal.

Ubar Manja Baidya, a revered figure in coastal Karnataka, played a crucial role in India’s fight against British rule. Known for his unwavering patriotism, Baidya was a revolutionary peasant leader who stood up to colonial oppression despite being employed by the British government. His contributions include active participation in the ‘Kalyanappana Katukai’ struggle, also referred to as the Amara Sullia Freedom Rebellion of 1837. This historic uprising, which occurred two decades before the Sepoy Mutiny, holds a significant place in India’s freedom movement. Baidya ultimately sacrificed his life in the struggle, earning him the status of a martyr.

The Billava Brigade aims to commemorate Baidya’s legacy and educate future generations about his sacrifices through the proposed statue. Members of the brigade emphasized that honoring such figures is essential to preserving the region’s rich history and inspiring the youth.

The initiative also highlights the brigade’s broader mission to uplift the Billava community by promoting awareness of its contributions to society. The group plans to undertake more such projects in the future to foster pride and unity within the community.

The proposal has garnered attention in the region, with hopes that the government will act promptly to recognize Baidya’s enduring legacy. If approved, the statue will serve as a lasting tribute to one of Karnataka’s unsung heroes of the freedom movement.
