Ancient Inscription Links Palutla Village to Vijayanagara Empire

An ancient inscription discovered in Palutla village, deep within the Nallamala forests of Andhra Pradesh, has revealed significant ties to the Vijayanagara empire. The inscription, dating back to October 18, 1436 CE during the reign of Vijayanagara ruler Devaraya II, was found near the Poleramma temple during an epigraphical survey conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The inscription, engraved on a Nandi pillar, is written in Telugu script and offers insights into the administrative, economic, and religious importance of Palutla in the 15th century. ASI director (epigraphy) K. Munirathnam Reddy highlighted that Palutla was not merely a remote tribal settlement but a thriving centre under the Vijayanagara empire. “Palutla served as a major trade hub and provided shelter to Shaiva devotees traveling to Srisailam. The inscription reflects the vibrant activity that existed in these forest regions centuries ago,” Reddy explained.

This discovery sheds light on the historical significance of the Nallamala region, which is often overshadowed by its dense forests and tribal settlements. The inscription indicates that Palutla was a key location for trade and religious activities, contributing to the empire’s influence in the area.

The Vijayanagara empire, known for its architectural marvels and cultural achievements, ruled much of South India from the 14th to the 17th centuries. Findings like this inscription help historians piece together the socio-economic fabric of the era, offering a glimpse into the lives of people beyond the empire’s urban centres.

The ASI’s survey in the Nallamala forests continues to uncover hidden chapters of India’s past, with the Palutla inscription standing as a testament to the region’s historical importance.
