Andhra Photographer’s Global Honour Shines Light on India’s Documentary Tradition

India’s documentary photography has once again garnered international acclaim, with Vijayawada-based photographer Tamma Srinivasa Reddy earning the prestigious Master of the Australian Photographic Society (MAPS) title. This recognition, awarded for his series *Risk as Job: The Daily Saga of Artisanal Coal Miners*, not only celebrates his individual achievement but also underscores the growing global appreciation for Indian documentary photography.

The Australian Photographic Society described the MAPS title as a recognition of “outstanding skill, talent and creativity in photography.” For Mr. Reddy, this honour marks a significant milestone in a career spanning over four decades, during which he has amassed numerous accolades. His coal miners’ series shifts the narrative focus from coal as a mere industrial resource to the lives of the miners who extract it, bringing their struggles and resilience into the spotlight.

Historian Dr. K.H.S.S. Sundar, who has closely followed Mr. Reddy’s work, highlighted how coal is often discussed in terms of energy and economic growth, while the miners themselves remain largely invisible. “Srinivasa Reddy’s camera specifically captures this overlooked world,” Dr. Sundar remarked. His photographs bring attention to the miners’ weathered faces, hardworking bodies, and quiet, often unseen landscapes, offering a poignant glimpse into their lives.

Mr. Reddy reflected on the challenges of photographing in coal mines, which lack the aesthetic lighting and familiar backdrops of other settings. He emphasized the delicate balance required to portray the miners’ resilience without veering into pity or romanticism. “A dedicated photographer must avoid both pity and romanticising,” he explained, adding that his goal was to let the dignity of labour shine through without turning hardship into spectacle.

Dr. Sundar situated Mr. Reddy within a generation of photographers shaped by discipline, patience, and extensive travel, rather than the instant gratification of digital excess. Over the years, Mr. Reddy has documented a wide range of subjects, including rural life, tribal communities, religious gatherings, working-class environments, cultural traditions, and vulnerable regions.

This is not the first time Mr. Reddy’s work has been internationally recognized. In 2021, he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in the UK for his commitment to social causes. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he risked his life to document the functioning of democratic institutions and frontline healthcare workers in India, further cementing his dedication to using photography as a tool for social commentary.

Dr. Sundar noted that the Australian Photographic Society’s recognition of Mr. Reddy reflects the quiet moral power of Indian documentary photography. His work, rooted in the local realities of Andhra Pradesh, resonates across continents, affirming that art can be both deeply personal and universally relevant. For India, this honour serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of its documentary tradition on global conversations about visual artistry.
