In a remarkable gesture aimed at supporting financially struggling couples, 1,500 pairs exchanged vows in a mass wedding ceremony in Kano State, northern Nigeria. The two-day event, organized by the regional government, provided a lifeline to those who might otherwise find it difficult to afford the expenses of a traditional wedding.

Each bride received a dowry of 200,000 naira (approximately $147 USD), along with assistance to start a small business. To help the newlyweds begin their married life, the government also provided essential household items, including beds, mattresses, and blankets. The initiative, which included pre-wedding screening and counselling sessions for the couples, was designed to ensure a smooth transition into married life.

This marks the second time Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has spearheaded such a program, which he describes as part of the state’s broader social policy to uplift low-income families and foster social stability. The initiative also extended its support to individuals who have lost their families in violent attacks, offering them a chance to rebuild their lives.

Mass weddings are not uncommon in Nigeria, especially in regions where poverty and insecurity have disrupted traditional family structures. By covering wedding costs and providing financial aid, the Kano State government aims to address economic barriers while promoting community cohesion.

The event has been widely praised for its focus on empowering vulnerable groups, particularly women, through financial independence and stability. As the newlyweds embark on their journey together, the program highlights the role of government-led social interventions in tackling inequality and fostering hope in challenging times.
