West Bengal to Install Water Meters for Industrial Use

West Bengal is planning to install water meters in commercial and industrial establishments to regulate water usage and promote conservation. State Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul shared this during an interactive session organized by the Merchants Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Kolkata on Thursday. “There has to be a water meter for commercial use, if not for residential houses,” Paul said, emphasizing the need for efficient water management in non-residential sectors.

The minister also highlighted the state’s interest in developing rainwater harvesting systems as part of broader efforts to address water scarcity. These initiatives align with the state’s focus on sustainable water practices and infrastructure improvement.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has also expressed commitment to advancing water-related projects in collaboration with the central government. Following his meeting with Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil at Nabanna, Adhikari shared on social media platform X that Bengal is gearing up to implement the central government’s Jal Jeevan Mission across the state. He added that the state will actively participate in flagship programs such as the Namami Gange Programme and Jal Shakti Abhiyan, aimed at cleaning rivers and enhancing water resources.

These measures reflect a growing urgency to address water management challenges in West Bengal, particularly in urban and industrial areas. With increasing demand for water and concerns over sustainability, the state’s move to install meters and adopt rainwater harvesting could set an example for other regions. Collaboration with the central government is expected to provide additional resources and expertise to support these efforts.
