Born in Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu, and later moving to Chennai, Sethupathi grew up in a household where financial struggles were a constant reality. As a young boy, he took on daily-wage jobs, worked at a telephone booth, and even worked night shifts, all while balancing his studies. “I don’t have any desire to do movies, sir. I’ve always loved working,” he said, reflecting on his early years.

The actor shared that his financial circumstances often shaped his decisions, even as a child. “Whenever I want something, I think about how much I should really want it. That’s when your financial status helps you decide,” he explained.

Standing by His Father

One of the most poignant memories Sethupathi shared was about the times debt collectors would come to their home. Rather than avoiding the situation, he chose to sit beside his father and face it head-on. “Even when debt collectors came over or someone sat down, I was the one who’d sit with my dad. I was the one dealing with it,” he said.

He also recalled his father’s routine of coming home around 9:30 p.m., parking his Bullet motorcycle, and bringing fried rice to share with the family. Though a simple gesture, Sethupathi described it with deep emotion, underscoring the significance of such moments in his life. “It was not a grand gesture. It was a man coming home on a motorcycle and bringing dinner,” he said, his voice softening as he recounted the memory.

From Struggles to Stardom

Sethupathi’s journey from a “below-average student” in Chennai to one of Indian cinema’s most versatile actors is a testament to his resilience. After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, he worked as an accounts assistant and later moved to Dubai as an accountant. Upon returning to India, he ventured into theatre, short films, and supporting roles before his breakthrough in Thenmerku Paruvakaatru.

Now 48, Sethupathi has over 50 films to his name and is celebrated for his ability to portray characters living on the margins without diminishing their dignity. From playing a goatherd to a trans woman, his diverse roles have earned him critical acclaim and a place among the highest-paid actors in Indian cinema.
