UK PM Burnham to End 'Subscription Traps' in Consumer Protection Move

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged to tackle predatory subscription practices, with new rules set to take effect in January 2024. The measures aim to protect consumers from hard-to-cancel subscriptions and misleading discounts, a move Downing Street says could save Britons billions annually.

Consumers Losing £1.6 Billion to Unwanted Subscriptions

Downing Street estimates that British consumers are currently spending £1.6 billion (US$2.2 billion) each year on subscriptions they neither need nor want. Burnham, addressing the issue, stated that people are “sick and tired of rip-off discounts and subscription traps,” where contracts automatically renew at higher costs or are difficult to exit.

To combat this, the government will mandate clearer upfront information, regular reminders, and simplified cancellation processes for subscription services. Burnham emphasized that leaving a subscription should be as straightforward as signing up for one.

New Protections for Consumers

Among the key changes is a 14-day cooling-off period, allowing consumers to cancel a subscription after a trial period or when a long-term contract renews. While details on implementation remain unclear, the government’s announcement signals a broader push to address financial pressures on households.

This initiative comes as Burnham, the new Labour leader, prepares to tour the country to engage with citizens about their financial struggles. The cost-of-living crisis has emerged as a central issue for his administration, with subscription traps being one of many areas where consumers face unnecessary financial strain.
