Andy Burnham vows to bring hope and opportunity to every corner of Britain

Andy Burnham told MPs he would "unlock a feeling of positivity and possibility in every postcode in Britain" as he faced the House of Commons for the first time as Prime Minister on Tuesday, six weeks after taking office.

The new leader's upbeat pitch marked a sharp tonal shift from his predecessor Keir Starmer, who had focused on emphasising the scale of Britain's difficulties. Speaking as parliament returned from its summer recess, Burnham said: "We can make this next decade better than the last. We can lift the prospects of all our people and places. We can put more power into every postcode. We can let Britain believe again. We can bring back hope".

Starmer ousted after two years

Burnham assumed the premiership after Starmer was forced out by his own Labour Party following a series of missteps and defeats in local elections, just two years after leading Labour to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election.

Starmer formally quit his parliamentary seat on Tuesday after 11 years, saying he wanted to "focus on other issues: international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world". A special election will be called within weeks to fill the vacancy.

Challenges mount

Burnham's parliamentary debut comes as conflicts in Europe and the Middle East threaten his domestic agenda, which centres on reviving economic growth, tackling cost-of-living pressures and devolving power from Westminster to Britain's regions.
