Toyota India has started deliveries of its first mass-market electric SUV, the Urban Cruiser Ebella, marking a significant step in its EV journey in the country. The Ebella, based on the Suzuki e-Vitara platform, aims to compete in the growing mid-size electric SUV segment, taking on rivals like the Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV, and Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara.

The top-spec Ebella E3 is priced at ₹23.60 lakh (ex-showroom). Toyota is also offering the SUV under its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) scheme, where buyers can opt for an introductory vehicle price of ₹15.25 lakh and pay ₹4.99 per kilometer for battery usage. The Ebella lineup includes three variants: E1, E2, and E3, though prices for the E1 and E2 trims are yet to be announced. Notably, the E3 variant is ₹3.60 lakh more expensive than the top Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara model, which is priced at ₹20 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Urban Cruiser Ebella comes with two battery pack options: a 49kWh unit and a 61kWh unit. The 49kWh battery powers a single motor on the front axle, delivering 144hp. This configuration caters to buyers seeking a balance between performance and range, though further details on the 61kWh variant are awaited.

Toyota's entry into India's EV market with the Ebella signals its commitment to sustainable mobility solutions. By leveraging its partnership with Suzuki, Toyota aims to tap into the growing demand for electric vehicles in the country. The competitive pricing and innovative BaaS model could attract a broader audience, especially those hesitant about upfront EV costs.

With deliveries now underway, the Urban Cruiser Ebella is expected to intensify competition in India's mid-size electric SUV segment, offering consumers more choices in the rapidly evolving EV landscape.
