TMC faces internal challenges as MPs and MLAs defect · NewsDarpan AI
The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, continues to face internal challenges as Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Baraik resigned on Thursday. This marks the third resignation from the party's Rajya Sabha members within four days. Earlier, Sushmita Dev and Sukhendu Ray had also stepped down from their positions.
The TMC has witnessed significant defections recently. Out of its 28 Lok Sabha MPs, 20 have left the party, and in the Rajya Sabha, 3 out of 13 MPs have resigned. Additionally, in the West Bengal assembly, 58 out of 80 TMC MLAs have formed a separate group, reducing Mamata Banerjee's strength to 22 MLAs.
On June 3, 58 rebel MLAs declared Ritabrata Banerjee as their leader and submitted a letter to the assembly speaker, requesting his recognition as the Leader of the Opposition. The speaker approved this request. Meanwhile, on June 8, 20 Lok Sabha MPs from the TMC decided to support the NDA government and sent a signed letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking separate seating arrangements as a distinct parliamentary block.
The political developments have also seen Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee engaging in damage control efforts. Abhishek Banerjee met Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on June 10, while Mamata Banerjee met Sonia Gandhi on June 9.
