Telangana CM leads Varuna Yagam to invoke much-needed rainfall

With monsoon rains falling short and time running out for the season’s retreat, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy spearheaded a grand Varuna Yagam on Monday, August 10, 2026, to seek divine intervention for rainfall in the Krishna and Godavari river basins. The ritual, steeped in tradition, was conducted at Nagarjunasagar with the participation of 108 ritviks and 11 sacred altars (homa kundams).

Ancient Rituals Revived for Modern Needs

The yagam, performed by priests and vedic scholars from the Yadadri Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, began early in the morning and culminated with the purnahuti received by CM Revanth Reddy. The venue, steeped in historical significance as a ritual hub during the Ikshvaku dynasty 1,800 years ago, echoed with vedic chants as prayers were offered for widespread rainfall, replenished reservoirs, and agricultural prosperity.

The ceremony included the recital of the four Vedas by 32 ritviks stationed around the yagashala, while others continuously chanted scriptures, creating a deeply devotional atmosphere. The Agni Pratishtapana, or consecration of the sacred fire, followed, with offerings made into the altars alongside mantras invoking Varuna, the rain god, to ensure harmony between nature and humanity.

A Collective Plea for Rain

The prayers extended beyond Telangana, seeking bountiful rains for the entire Krishna and Godavari catchment areas to ensure adequate water for the state’s reservoirs and agricultural needs. Ministers Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and Konda Surekha, former Minister K. Jana Reddy, Legislative Council Chairman G. Sukhender Reddy, government advisors, and several MLAs and MLCs were present to support the initiative.

Why It Matters

With less than two months left for the monsoon season to recede, the yagam underscores the growing anxiety over potential water shortages in Telangana. The Krishna and Godavari rivers are lifelines for the state’s irrigation and drinking water needs. A deficit in rainfall could severely impact farmers and the broader economy, making this traditional appeal to Varuna a significant cultural and symbolic effort to address a pressing environmental challenge.
