Telangana approves 82 lakh rupees to conserve 4500-year-old Egyptian mummy

The Telangana government has approved an ₹82 lakh budget to scientifically conserve an Egyptian mummy dating back to 2500 B.C. housed at the State Archaeology Museum, with Tourism and Culture Minister Jupally Krishna Rao directing officials to expedite fund release for the project.

The conservation proposal, prepared based on recommendations from German experts, forms part of a broader plan to comprehensively renovate the museum at Public Gardens in Nampally, Hyderabad. The minister announced the initiative during a site inspection on Wednesday, stating the government aims to restore the facility's former glory and transform it into a major tourist attraction.

Minister inspects artefact galleries

During his visit, Krishna Rao toured multiple galleries displaying bronze artefacts, Buddhist art, sculptures, cannons and paintings. He reviewed the condition of rare archaeological and historical items housed at the museum and discussed preservation strategies with officials.

Week-long deadline for renovation estimates

The minister instructed the Archaeology Department to prepare comprehensive cost estimates for renovation works, including building conservation, structural repairs and painting. Director of Archaeology Arjun Rao was directed to submit the estimates within a week to ensure development works could begin without delay.

Tourism push for rare collections

Krishna Rao emphasised the government's vision to develop the museum into a must-visit destination for both domestic and international tourists visiting Hyderabad. He called for increased publicity of the museum's rare archaeological collections and historical significance, and asked officials to prepare specific plans to boost tourist footfall.

The Egyptian mummy conservation project represents a key priority, with the minister directing officials to take all necessary measures to ensure its scientific preservation for future generations.
