Tamil Nadu approves ₹1,200-crore integrated Assembly-Secretariat complex in Chennai

The Tamil Nadu government has formally approved the process to construct a new integrated Assembly-Secretariat complex at Pattinapakkam (Foreshore Estate) in Chennai, consolidating an aggregate 25.55 acres of land for the project. The Public Works Department has been directed to submit a Detailed Project Report with estimates within three months.

₹1,200-crore integrated complex

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced the State government's plan in the Assembly on September 3 to construct the new integrated Secretariat complex in Chennai, spread over 20 lakh sq. ft., at an estimated cost of ₹1,200 crore. The new complex will house both the Legislative Assembly and Secretariat, equipped with modern facilities.

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and Secretariat currently function on the historic Fort St. George campus.

Land parcels identified at Foreshore Estate

According to the order issued by the Public Department, the State government has identified multiple land parcels at Foreshore Estate for the complex. These comprise 21.76 acres under the possession of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board, 0.93 acres of Greater Chennai Corporation land, 1.73 acres of Revenue Department land, and 1.13 acres of Tamil Nadu Housing Board land under the possession of the State government. The identified land falls under Mylapore town.

The State government had already obtained no-objection certificates through letters from the Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Housing Board; Commissioner, Greater Chennai Corporation; and District Collector, Chennai, for utilising the land.

Three-tier committee structure

The government has constituted three committees to oversee the project. These include a committee to call for Expressions of Interest and finalise the architectural consultancy firm; a committee to finalise building drawings and designs at the preliminary design stage; and a committee to finalise building drawings and designs at the final design stage, the order said.
