Hong Kong researchers have identified traces of the critically endangered Chinese bahaba, also known as the "Tai O fish," in local waters for the first time in over ten years. The breakthrough was made last September using advanced environmental DNA (eDNA) technology, a month after 1,300 hatchery-reared juvenile bahaba were released into the Pearl River Estuary by mainland authorities.

Cutting-Edge DNA Technology Enables Discovery

The study, co-led by Jack Ip Chi-ho, assistant professor at Lingnan University, and Wang Junjie from South China Normal University, developed a highly sensitive genetic identification method capable of detecting even minute traces of eDNA left in the marine environment. This innovative approach allowed researchers to confirm the presence of the rare fish in Hong Kong's western waters.

Ip explained that eDNA technology works by identifying genetic material shed by organisms into their surroundings, such as cells, tissues, and waste. "If a fish has passed through an area and left behind even a tiny amount of eDNA, its presence can be accurately determined," he said.

Conservation Efforts Show Promising Results

The discovery suggests that some of the juvenile bahaba released into the estuary may have migrated into Hong Kong waters, offering a glimmer of hope for the survival of this critically endangered species. Lingnan University highlighted the significance of the finding, as the Chinese bahaba had not been detected in the region for over a decade.

The Chinese bahaba, prized for its swim bladder in traditional medicine, has faced severe population decline due to overfishing and habitat loss. The use of eDNA technology not only aids in tracking its movements but also provides valuable data for conservation strategies aimed at protecting and restoring its population.

A Step Forward for Marine Conservation

This milestone underscores the potential of environmental DNA technology to monitor and conserve marine biodiversity. By enabling researchers to detect elusive and endangered species like the Chinese bahaba, the method offers a powerful tool for safeguarding Hong Kong's aquatic ecosystems.
