Singapore Acquires Lee Kuan Yew's Home for Historical Conservation

Singapore has officially taken possession of 38 Oxley Road, the former home of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, as part of efforts to conserve the site for its historical significance. The National Heritage Board (NHB) will now study how the property can be transformed into a public space while respecting Lee’s wishes for privacy, according to a joint statement by the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and the NHB.

Key Site in Singapore’s Independence Movement

The house at 38 Oxley Road holds deep historical importance, as it was the site of pivotal events in Singapore’s independence movement and national history. Earlier this year, the SLA and NHB announced that the property had been gazetted for acquisition, with compensation to be determined based on its market value at the time of the gazette.

No Immediate Public Access

For now, the property will remain closed to the public. Necessary maintenance will be carried out during this interim period to ensure the site’s upkeep.

Conservation Over Redevelopment

The acquisition ensures that the property cannot be redeveloped for residential, commercial, or other private purposes. This move underscores the government’s commitment to preserving the site’s historical and cultural significance.
