Sugar and Textiles Minister Rudrappa Lamani emphasized the importance of national unity and collective responsibility in safeguarding India's freedom while building a stronger nation for future generations. Addressing the gathering at the 80th Independence Day celebrations held at Hosamani Siddappa District Stadium in Haveri on Saturday, Lamani hoisted the national flag and reflected on the sacrifices that secured India’s independence.

Tribute to Freedom Fighters
Lamani underscored that India's freedom was not a gift but the result of decades of struggle and sacrifice by countless individuals. He paid homage to iconic leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Subhas Chandra Bose, among others. He also highlighted the contributions of women freedom fighters like Kittur Chennamma and Rani Lakshmibai. Additionally, Lamani acknowledged the role of Haveri district's own freedom fighters, including Mailara Mahadevappa and Sangur Kariyappa. "The freedom struggle is a remarkable example of unity in diversity. We must uphold unity, fraternity, equality, and non-violence," he said.

Focus on Government Initiatives
The minister took the opportunity to highlight the Karnataka government’s achievements under its five guarantee schemes, which include Gruha Lakshmi, Gruha Jyothi, Shakti, Anna Bhagya, and Yuva Nidhi. He revealed that ₹1.34 lakh crore had been spent on implementing these schemes, benefiting crores of families across the state. Additionally, direct recruitment for over 54,000 vacant posts and the distribution of title deeds under the Bhoomi Guarantee scheme were among the government’s efforts to address socio-economic challenges.

Agriculture and Healthcare Progress
Lamani detailed several agriculture-focused initiatives, including a ₹100-crore programme for recycling agricultural waste, the establishment of a Millet Hub, and AI-enabled farmer services. In Haveri district alone, 3.17 lakh hectares had been sown during the kharif season, with over 95,000 tonnes of fertilizer distributed. On the healthcare front, he announced the completion of a 50-bed ICU at HIMS, the installation of an MRI scanner at the district hospital, and the approval of a 70-seat Institute of Allied Health Sciences. He also noted that over 10,000 girls had received HPV vaccines, and 20 multi-village drinking water schemes would provide treated river water to 726 habitations.

Celebrating Achievements
As part of the Independence Day festivities, 27 individuals from various fields were felicitated for their achievements. Meritorious SSLC and PUC students were also honored during the event. A march-past featuring 14 contingents, including police, fire services, NCC, and school students, added to the celebratory atmosphere, alongside patriotic dance performances showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage.
