Royal Enfield launches Himalayan 440 adventure bike on September 4

Royal Enfield will launch the Himalayan 440 in India on September 4, with units already arriving at dealerships across the country ahead of the official unveiling. The motorcycle was spotted partially covered at what appears to be a dealership stockyard, revealing key details about its instrument setup and positioning in the brand's adventure line-up.

Simpler cockpit replaces comprehensive dial layout

The Himalayan 440 features a notably different instrument cluster compared to the now-defunct Himalayan 411. While the previous bike came with as many as five round dials including the Tripper, the new model adopts a more conservatively laid out console. The main dial houses an analogue speedometer with a small LCD for displaying other crucial data, while sitting beside this is a Tripper navigation module. The Tripper, which might come as an option, enables smartphone connectivity, allowing riders to access turn-by-turn navigation, receive call and message alerts, and pair their phones for enhanced on-the-go convenience.

443cc engine shared with Scram 440 platform

The Himalayan 440 will use the same 443cc, air/oil-cooled, single-cylinder engine as the Scram 440, which produces 25.4bhp and 34Nm and is paired with a six-speed gearbox. This engine is known for its effortless torque, and the strong low-end grunt should make it more suitable for off-roading. Royal Enfield could make changes to the engine's calibration for the Himalayan 440, potentially to suit its touring-oriented character, though major mechanical changes are not expected.

Adventure-focused hardware and positioning

Unlike the Scram 440's 19-inch front wheel, the Himalayan 440 should incorporate a 21-inch front wheel for added off-road capability. The motorcycle is expected to share its basic underpinnings with the Scram 440, although Royal Enfield is expected to make changes to suit its adventure-touring role, including revised ergonomics, improved wind protection, longer-travel suspension and a more touring-oriented riding position. The design could be nearly identical to the Himalayan 411, except for new paint schemes and decals.

Launch timing and market gap

The Himalayan 440 will make its debut around Royal Enfield's Himalayan Base Camp event in Ladakh. The launch comes at an important time for the Himalayan nameplate, as 2026 marks 10 years since the original Himalayan went on sale in India.

The motorcycle is expected to be priced at around Rs 2.50 lakh (ex-showroom), slotting it between the Scram 440 and the more expensive Himalayan 450. NDTV AutoMate predicts the new model could be priced between Rs 2.35 lakh and Rs 2.45 lakh (ex-showroom). This positioning addresses a significant pricing gap in Royal Enfield's adventure motorcycle lineup, as the Himalayan 450 is currently priced between Rs 3.09 lakh and Rs 3.39 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Scram 440 retails from Rs 2.24 lakh to Rs 2.34 lakh (ex-showroom).

Spiritual successor to discontinued Himalayan 411

The upcoming motorcycle is expected to serve as a spiritual successor to the discontinued Himalayan 411. The Himalayan 440 is based on the original Himalayan 411 platform, which was discontinued a couple of years ago when the company introduced the all-new Himalayan 450. The older platform lived on in the form of the Scram 440, a more road-focused crossover that debuted with a larger 443 cc engine.

Rather than matching the Himalayan 450 on performance, electronics and premium features, the Himalayan 440 is likely to focus on mechanical simplicity, touring ability and accessibility. The Himalayan 450 uses a liquid-cooled engine, ride-by-wire throttle, TFT instrument cluster and electronic rider aids. In contrast, the Himalayan 440 is expected to adopt a more straightforward package, with fewer electronic features and a greater emphasis on ease of use and maintenance.
