Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed Energy department officials to begin measures to procure coal from Mahanadi Coalfields and Coal India after power generation stopped at the Yadadri Thermal power generation centre because of coal shortage.

Coal shortage halts focus on Yadadri generation

The Chief Minister took a serious view of the stoppage of power generation at the Yadadri Thermal power generation centre due to the shortage of coal.

At a high-level review of the Energy sector here on Wednesday, he instructed Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka to hold a meeting with Union Coal Minister Kishan Reddy to address the coal crisis for power generation in the State.

The review also led to directions for TGGENCO officials to commence power generation in full installed capacity from the Yadadri Thermal Power Station before Dussehra festival.

During the meeting, CM Revanth Reddy sought details on the supply of quality coal to the thermal power units in the State.

Officials briefed the Chief Minister that G9 grade coal is required for generation at the Yadadri Thermal Power Station.

They also informed him that Singareni did not have the coal blocks to produce G9 coal.

The officials further said there is no possibility of producing G9 coal from Singareni in the near future also.

Technology choice and coal logistics reviewed

The Chief Minister raised questions on the construction of the Yadadri Thermal Power Station using a specific technology requiring only G9 quality coal, which was unavailable in Singareni.

The meeting reviewed in detail the construction of the Yadadri Thermal Power Station far away from the pithead, adjacent to coal mines.

It also reviewed the additional financial burden placed on the State due to coal supply logistics.

Officials informed the Chief Minister that Yadadri Power Station was constructed at a distance due to political reasons during the BRS rule.

They said lack of availability of coal was the reason for the failure to achieve full-scale power generation at the Yadadri Thermal Power Station.

As per the official reports, the additional financial burden on the State government to supply coal to the thermal centre was ₹40,000 crore.

The review therefore centred on both immediate coal procurement and the longer-running constraints around the type of coal needed for Yadadri Thermal Power Station.

The directions to approach Mahanadi Coalfields and Coal India, and to involve Union Coal Minister Kishan Reddy, came against the official briefing that Singareni cannot supply the required G9 grade coal in the near future.

The instruction to TGGENCO to begin full installed-capacity generation before Dussehra festival was issued while the State was also assessing the financial impact of coal logistics for the thermal centre.
