Robert Downey Jr to Star as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday
Robert Downey Jr reveals insights on his role as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, promising a fresh take for MCU fans.
Robert Downey Jr is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a groundbreaking role as Doctor Doom in the highly anticipated film Avengers: Doomsday. The actor recently shared insights into the challenges of crafting a story that meets the high expectations of MCU fans while staying true to its legacy.
The announcement of Downey Jr’s return to the MCU, this time as the complex villain Doctor Doom rather than his iconic portrayal of Iron Man, sparked immense excitement online. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, Avengers: Doomsday has quickly become one of the most awaited films globally.
In a recent interview with Comic Book Reporter, Downey Jr reflected on the immense pressure of stepping into such a pivotal role. He revealed that he has been drawing inspiration from the Russo brothers’ grounded approach to filmmaking. “I try to think like the brothers. I try to feel like I’m in the writing room. I try to feel all that stuff,” he said.
Downey Jr also emphasized the team’s commitment to innovation, noting that Doctor Doom’s character is being developed from scratch, in line with the Russo brothers’ earlier comments on the film’s unique approach. “There’s some experimentation. We’ve had our moments of, ‘Let’s shift here.’ But we landed in a place that I think will more than suffice,” he shared. He added that the film’s structure and interplay between characters are key elements in ensuring it delivers on its promise.
The actor acknowledged the challenge of following monumental MCU films like Infinity War and Endgame. He hinted that Avengers: Doomsday will introduce something entirely new to keep the franchise fresh and engaging. “There’s something going on in Doomsday and forward that is literally the only antidote to, ‘How do you not have these films be let down after an Infinity War and an Endgame?’” Downey Jr said.
Director Joe Russo echoed this sentiment, describing Avengers: Doomsday as the most emotionally complex and mature film in the franchise. “There are a lot of surprises in this. And I think (Doomsday is) the most emotionally complex of all of them. And in a lot of ways, the most mature of all of them,” Russo stated.
Fans can mark their calendars as Avengers: Doomsday is slated for release in theatres on December 18, 2026.
