Qatar Fans Receive Government-Funded Trip to World Cup to Support National Team

Qatar has brought a vibrant cheering section to the World Cup by sponsoring an all-expenses-paid trip for a large group of supporters to North America. Approximately 1,000 Qatari fans have arrived in Vancouver aboard jets chartered by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, ahead of Thursday’s match against Canada. These fans are staying in luxury accommodations, including the Fairmont and the JW Marriott Parq, and have been seen enlivening downtown Vancouver with traditional darbuka drum performances.

The initiative, known as the “Qatari Fans Delegation Program,” is funded by Qatar’s Social and Sport Contribution Fund in partnership with the nation’s soccer federation. The program covers flights, hotel stays, local transportation, and additional perks for the fans. The goal is to create a dynamic stadium atmosphere that will inspire the players to deliver their best performances on the global stage. Qatari students studying in the United States and Canada were also invited to join the matches. Despite this effort, Qatari supporters are expected to be significantly outnumbered by Canadian fans at BC Place.

Qatar, a major exporter of natural gas and oil with a population of about 3.2 million, hosted the 2022 World Cup, marking its debut in the tournament. However, it became the first host nation to lose all its group-stage matches. This year, the team has shown improvement, securing a surprising 1-1 draw against Switzerland in Santa Clara, California, thanks to a stoppage-time header by Boualem Khoukhi.

Canada, meanwhile, also achieved a milestone by earning its first World Cup point with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina last Friday in Toronto. Cyle Larin scored the equalizer in the 78th minute, setting the stage for an exciting showdown against Qatar.
