Congress MLA and former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh officially took charge as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee on Sunday, declaring that the party was united.

Punjab Congress in-charge and AICC General Secretary Sachin Pilot formally handed over the responsibility to Singh.

Addressing party workers in Chandigarh, Singh said the Congress had a responsibility beyond contesting elections.

‘Voice of the people’

Singh said the party must be the voice of the people and stand firmly for their rights.

“The people of Punjab are waiting for their rights, justice and a secure future,” he said.

He said it was the Congress’s responsibility to meet the expectations of every section of society, including farmers and young people.

“The Congress is united, and our struggle is against a system that has failed to secure people’s rightful entitlements,” Singh said.

Singh also said the party needed to understand the sentiments of people awaiting justice in sacrilege cases and raise its voice in support of justice.

He said the true test of any government was the trust of the public and the positive change it brought to people’s lives.

Attack on Mann government and AAP

Targeting Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Singh said the government should focus on the problems facing Punjab’s people instead of worrying about the Congress team.

His remarks placed the Congress’s new state leadership in opposition to what he described as the government’s focus on the party rather than on public concerns.

Singh said the Congress had a strong team of experienced leaders and dedicated workers.

Referring to the experience of MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, he said the party would work collectively to safeguard Punjab’s interests.

Pilot stresses public support

Pilot said the Congress’s objective was not merely to achieve political success but also to win the hearts of Punjab’s people and live up to their expectations.

He expressed confidence that the unity of Congress workers and public support would help strengthen the party’s position in the State.

Singh also alleged that the politics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were weakening democratic values in the country.

The charge added a wider national dimension to his first address after taking charge of the Punjab Congress unit.

For Singh, the party’s stated priorities include raising issues of rights, justice and a secure future while working collectively to safeguard Punjab’s interests.
