A special workshop was organised at Swami Vivekanand Government College, Ghumarwin, in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, to create awareness among the younger generation about statistical products. The workshop was organised by the college’s Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) under the Support for Statistical Strengthening (SSS) Scheme.

More than 100 students from the college’s BBA, BCA and PGDCA programmes actively participated in the workshop. The programme focused on helping students understand the growing relevance of statistics and its practical use in different areas.

At the beginning of the workshop, Dr Atul Gupta addressed the students and highlighted the increasing importance of statistics in the present time. He said that statistics is not limited to being an academic subject. It is also an important tool for making effective and rational decisions in education, business, administration, the economy, research and various aspects of daily life.

Dr Atul Gupta encouraged the students to develop statistical thinking and strengthen their ability to understand data. He explained that a clear understanding of data can help people assess situations more effectively and take decisions on a more rational basis.

Dr Basu Dev Garg, the resource person at the workshop, gave detailed information about the role of statistics in making rational decisions in governance and personal life. He explained that decisions based on accurate, reliable and relevant data are more rational, effective and result-oriented.

Using various examples connected with daily life, Dr Basu Dev Garg explained how statistics helps people understand the situations around them, analyse facts and make better decisions. He also drew attention to the importance of using data carefully before reaching conclusions or taking action.

Dr Basu Dev Garg specifically emphasised the process of “Data से Information, Information से Insight और Insight से Decision”. He said that correctly understanding data and drawing useful information and insight from it makes the decision-making process more scientific and effective.

He further explained that this approach helps develop creativity, logical thinking and a scientific outlook among students. He called upon the students not to view statistics only as a subject included in their curriculum. Instead, he urged them to understand its practical importance and use it in their personal and professional lives.

The workshop also sought to connect statistical learning with situations that students may encounter in everyday life. Through the discussions and examples, the participants were introduced to the process of moving from raw data to useful information, insight and finally a decision.

At the end of the workshop, the students expressed a positive response. They said that the workshop had provided them with significant help in understanding the practical uses of statistics and the process of making decisions based on data in real-life situations.
