Oommen Chandy Remembered for Empathy and Public Service by V.D. Satheesan

Oommen Chandy was a leader who deeply empathised with the struggles of ordinary citizens, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said on Monday. Satheesan was speaking at a commemoration event organised by the Kerala Secretariat Association to honour the late leader's legacy.

Chandy, known for his hands-on governance, conducted multiple mass contact programmes to humanise the administration. "He listened to people and changed rules and amended laws as needed to ease the hardships of the public," Satheesan noted during his address.

A Compassionate Administrator

Satheesan highlighted Chandy's unique approach to governance, describing him as an administrator who identified public concerns by listening intently to recurring issues raised by citizens. "Whenever he heard an issue being raised by several persons, he understood it to be a public concern and did his best to attend to it," Satheesan said. He added that Kerala had never seen an administrator with such profound compassion and concern for the people.

Launch of Medical Aid Scheme

During the event, Satheesan also inaugurated a medical treatment financial assistance scheme introduced by the Kerala Secretariat Association. The initiative aims to provide support for those in need of medical care, reflecting the values of public service and empathy that Chandy championed throughout his career.

The commemoration served as a poignant reminder of Chandy's enduring legacy as a leader who prioritised the well-being of the common man.
