Nike Sets Alphafly 4, Apex, Swooshfly Launch Dates In Race-Day Push
Nike will release Alphafly 4 in October, Apex in January 2027 and Swooshfly in February 2027 in a new race-day footwear lineup.
Nike will release Alphafly 4 in October, followed by Nike Apex in January 2027 and Nike Swooshfly in February 2027, as part of a new “race-day system of speed” that the company says is meant to help runners choose shoes by goal, distance and experience rather than by a single performance hierarchy.
The shoes will be available at nike.com and select retail locations, according to Nike.
Nike describes the lineup as a footwear system built for “every runner,” with Apex, Alphafly 4 and Swooshfly each serving a distinct purpose within a broader race-day offering.
A lineup built around choice, not hierarchy
Nike says its race-day system of speed gives runners “a clear way” to select footwear that best matches their goals, distance and experience.
The company said it designed the system to provide runners with a choice, not a hierarchy.
That framing is central to the launch because Nike says race day can mean very different things to different runners, including “a second that changes history,” “a personal best” or “a first starting line.”
Nike said every runner’s journey is different, and their race-day needs are different as well.
The company said the new system is built around the belief that race-day innovation should help runners pursue their own goals rather than fit into one definition of performance.
Nike said each shoe in the lineup has a distinct purpose so runners can find a race-day experience aligned with their ambitions, experience and preferences.
Together, Nike Apex, Alphafly 4 and Swooshfly make up what Nike calls its most comprehensive race-day offering yet.
Nike said the system gives runners more ways to access the brand’s decades of athlete insight and innovation.
The company also said the system complements its road running footwear lineup with innovations built for any race day.
What each shoe is meant to do
Nike Apex is positioned for runners “chasing every possible second,” according to Nike.
Nike Alphafly is meant to help more runners experience marathon speed, according to the company.
Nike Swooshfly is described by Nike as “an invitation to race day.”
Nike said the three shoes are complementary innovations that make race day feel “more possible, personal and powerful.”
The company’s broader claim is that race-day speed should belong to all runners.
Nike said each shoe came from “a runner’s problem” that was studied in the Nike Sport Research Lab, solved through product and proven through athlete testing before reaching a starting line.
Nike’s contemporary system of speed brings together proprietary Air Zoom platforms, advanced foams and engineered plates, according to the company.
Nike said those technologies are intended to deliver distinct solutions for different runners, goals and race-day experiences.
The company said the lineup is designed to address athletes’ needs around comfort, confidence, efficiency and speed.
Nike said those needs apply whether runners are training for their first, fastest or farthest race.
Nike’s pitch: race day looks different for everyone
“Race day is one of the most meaningful moments in a runner’s journey, but that moment looks different for everyone,” Bret Schoolmeester, VP, Nike Running Footwear, said.
“With Nike Apex, Alphafly 4 and Swooshfly, we created a system that helps runners choose the experience they want on race day, whether that means finding the confidence to step onto a starting line for the first time or chasing every possible second in pursuit of a breakthrough performance,” Schoolmeester said.
WWD also cited the same statement from Bret Schoolmeester, identifying him as vice president of Nike Running footwear.
According to WWD, Nike unveiled the “race-day system of speed” on Wednesday and positioned it as designed to meet the needs of “every runner.”
WWD reported that, according to Nike, the system includes the new Apex and Swooshfly sneakers as well as the Alphafly 4.
WWD also reported the same launch order: Alphafly 4 in October, Nike Apex in January 2027 and Nike Swooshfly in February 2027.
Why the running push matters for Nike
Nike’s running business has been a bright spot for the Swoosh during recent quarters, according to WWD.
WWD reported that the company is doubling down on the category with a slate of new shoes.
The latest running shoe push comes at what WWD described as a pivotal moment for Nike as it continues to work on its turnaround after several years of losses.
During the fourth quarter 2026 conference call in July, chief executive officer Elliott Hill said, “Running grew $5 billion: $1 billion over the last five quarters, and we gained five market share points.”
Hill also said those five quarters were “consecutive quarters of double-digit growth in Nike Running,” according to WWD.
He said the points gained in running market share in statement footwear during fiscal year 2026 across Western Europe and North America were “more than any other top five brand.”
WWD reported that the Nike Running playbook has led the way in the company’s turnaround efforts.
Hill also spoke about efforts to sharpen Nike’s focus with consumers.
“We’ve had great response with the sharp, sharp focus on the consumer, whether it’s product, whether it’s in the investments we’ve made on the ground in retail,” Hill said, citing the growth in Nike Running as proof that the focus strategy is working.
BNP Paribas analyst Laurent Vasilescu noted in July that for Nike Running, “We know from the prior earnings calls that running grew high-single-digit percent in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, and over 20 percent in the [first three quarters] of fiscal 2026 and then slowed to up middle-single digits in the [fourth quarter].”
Vasilescu estimated that Nike Running is at $4.4 billion, or 10 percent of overall company revenues, over a four-quarter basis.
He made that estimate while WWD reported that the category is just over $5 billion in revenue across the past five quarters.
Nike’s innovation history is part of the message
Nike says its advantage comes from decades of racing innovation shaped by athletes.
The company traces that history from co-founder Bill Bowerman’s earliest handcrafted spikes to the original super shoes that redefined racing more than a decade ago.
Nike said it has consistently pushed running innovation forward for more than 50 years.
The company said its current commitment continues through a race-day system built around athlete insight, scientific research and breakthrough technologies.
Nike said those technologies are designed to improve running economy and help runners unlock new levels of performance.
That positioning links the new Apex, Alphafly 4 and Swooshfly lineup to a longer Nike narrative about racing footwear innovation.
Nike also said followers can use Swoosh.Racing to see the race-day system of speed come to life.
Adidas competition remains strong
Despite Nike’s growth in running, WWD reported that the company is facing stiff competition from Adidas.
“Running has never been stronger,” Adidas chief executive officer Bjørn Gulden told analysts on the company’s second quarter earnings call in July.
“I think it’s fair to say that we are winning with running,” Gulden added.
“We are winning competitions on the road, on the track,” Gulden said.
“We are sponsoring big events and our running shoes in general are having great sell-throughs, which was not the case three years ago,” Gulden said.
“We certainly are a running brand again, which we haven’t been for a long time,” Gulden said.
WWD reported that Adidas swept the podium at the Berlin Marathon just this past weekend.
All six runners on the race’s podium on Sunday competed in the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3, according to WWD.
WWD described the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 as a $500 shoe released by the German brand earlier this year.
The Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 debuted for the first time at the London Marathon in April, according to WWD.
At that race, Sabastian Sawe set a new record of 1:59:30.
Tigist Assefa also set a new record for women at 2:15:41, according to WWD.
Second place men’s finisher Yomif Kejelcha, who also wore the shoe, finished at 1:59:41.
WWD reported that Nike is hoping its new slate of race-day shoes can score the same records.
Nike’s recent race benchmark
WWD reported that Nike’s last major win came in 2023 at the Chicago Marathon.
At that race, the late Kelvin Kiptum became the first person to break the sub-2:01 barrier in a sanctioned race by running 2:00:35 in a pair of Nike Air Zoom Alphafly 3.
WWD said another win like this could help Nike’s bottom line.
That is why the new race-day footwear system is more than a product refresh in WWD’s analysis of Nike’s running business.
The launch places Apex, Alphafly 4 and Swooshfly inside a category that has recently helped Nike’s turnaround efforts, while also putting the company’s race-day shoes into direct comparison with Adidas’ recent road-racing momentum.
Financial backdrop before first quarter 2027 results
In its most recent fourth quarter 2026 results, Nike reported net sales of $10.97 billion.
That was down 1 percent from $11.09 billion in the fourth quarter last year on a reported basis.
Nike also reported that net sales were down 4 percent on a currency-neutral basis.
The company is expected to report its first quarter 2027 earnings on Oct. 1, according to WWD.
Against that backdrop, Nike’s race-day system of speed arrives as the company highlights running as a growth area and presents a broader set of race-day shoes for different types of runners.
Nike’s own product message is that Apex, Alphafly 4 and Swooshfly are not a ladder from entry-level to elite, but a set of options shaped around different race-day goals.
Its business context, as reported by WWD, is that running has been a strong category for Nike even as the company continues its turnaround and faces Adidas competition in racing.
The immediate rollout begins with Alphafly 4 in October, before Nike Apex follows in January 2027 and Nike Swooshfly follows in February 2027.
