New Ghatkopar Bridge to Alleviate Traffic Congestion by 2027

A major infrastructure project in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs is set to transform traffic patterns and reduce congestion. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) are jointly developing a cable-stayed bridge in Ghatkopar, which will connect the eastern and western parts of the area while spanning over railway tracks, Metro Line 4, and the underground bullet train corridor. The bridge is expected to be completed by 2027 at a cost of ₹350 crore.

Addressing Long-Standing Traffic Challenges

For decades, commuters relied on a rail-over-bridge (ROB) in Ghatkopar to travel between Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg and the Eastern Express Highway. However, the ROB was deemed unsafe and closed to vehicular traffic following a safety audit in 2018. Since then, motorists have been forced to navigate heavily congested routes like the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road (AGLR), leading to significant delays during peak hours. The new bridge aims to provide seamless connectivity and alleviate these bottlenecks.

Innovative Design and Features

The bridge will feature a combination of cable-stayed and bowstring steel spans to accommodate its unique alignment. The cable-stayed portion, measuring 108 meters, will cross the railway tracks, while the bowstring spans will cover the bullet train corridor (92 meters) and LBS Marg (90 meters). Additionally, footpaths will be included for pedestrian convenience, and service roads will be constructed below the bridge for local traffic. The structure begins at Golibar Road Junction and ends at the Eastern Express Highway.

Phased Execution for Minimal Disruption

To ensure smoother implementation, the project is being executed in phases. Once the right-hand side of the bridge is completed, traffic will be diverted to this section, allowing work on the remaining arm to proceed. An MRIDC official emphasized that the bridge will significantly reduce travel time for commuters in the eastern suburbs.
