Fitness Concerns Loom Over Tejaswin Shankar’s Decathlon Participation

Tejaswin Shankar, India’s top decathlete, is scheduled to compete today despite injury concerns. Shankar had to withdraw from the high jump event earlier this week due to fitness issues, casting doubt on his ability to complete the decathlon. His condition remains a critical point of interest as India looks to add to its medal tally.

Medal Rounds in Weightlifting and Athletics

India’s weightlifting contingent will feature prominently today, with Martina Devi Maibam competing in the women’s 86+kg final and Lovepreet Singh in the men’s 110+kg final. Both athletes are strong contenders for podium finishes.

In athletics, Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill will vie for medals in the men’s shot put final, while Seema Kaliramna and Nidhi Rani are set to compete in the women’s discus throw final. Parul Chaudhary, who finished fifth in the 3000m steeplechase earlier, will aim for redemption in the women’s 5000m final later today.

Day 7 Highlights: Silver Success and Historic Para Athletics

India had a memorable outing on Day 7, with Murali Sreeshankar clinching silver in the men’s long jump with a leap of 8.09m, marking his second consecutive CWG silver medal. The country also celebrated a historic one-two finish in the men’s 100m T47 para athletics event. Dilip Mahadu Gavit secured gold with a time of 10.71 seconds, while Mohammed Basil claimed silver, clocking 10.83 seconds.

Additionally, Yashas Palaksha and Santhosh K Tamilarasan advanced to the men’s 400m hurdles final as the two fastest losers from their respective heats. Animesh Kujur, India’s national record holder in the 200m, qualified for the semifinals with a season-best performance of 20.46 seconds.

Mixed Results in Other Events

India faced setbacks in weightlifting and swimming on Day 7. Sanjana was unable to finish in the women’s 77kg category, while swimmers Sajan Prakash and Aneesh S Gowda failed to qualify for the men’s 200m freestyle final.

Why It Matters

Day 8 presents a critical opportunity for India to bolster its medal tally, particularly in athletics and weightlifting, where several athletes are poised for podium finishes. With Neeraj Chopra’s debut and multiple finals scheduled, the day could prove pivotal in shaping India’s overall performance at the Games.
