Jhandu Kumar Wins Bronze in Para Powerlifting at CWG 2026

Para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar clinched the bronze medal in the Men’s Heavyweight category at the Commonwealth Games 2026, marking India’s first medal at the event. Competing in Group B, Kumar executed successful lifts of 181 kg and 190 kg, amassing 130.9 points. He briefly led the competition before being overtaken by Matthew Harding, who secured silver, and gold medalist Riluwan Idris.

A Journey of Resilience and Triumph

Kumar’s achievement is a testament to his extraordinary journey from Harnaut in Bihar’s Nalanda district. Born into a humble family, the son of a vegetable vendor has faced challenges since birth due to polio. His determination saw him transition from para athletics, where he excelled in shot put and discus throw, to para powerlifting—a decision sparked by his interest in strength training during his early athletic career.

Mentorship That Changed the Game

His breakthrough came after a disappointing debut at the National Championship. Paralympic bronze medalist Rajinder Singh Rahelu recognized his potential and invited him to train at the Sports Authority of India’s National Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar. Under Rahelu’s mentorship, Kumar quickly rose to prominence in the sport.

Record-Breaking Feats and Global Recognition

Kumar’s hard work paid off in 2025 when he set a National Record with a 205 kg lift, later surpassing it at the Khelo India Para Games with a 206 kg lift. His consistent performances earned him bronze medals at the Beijing World Cup 2025 and the Asian & Oceania Championships 2026, securing his place at the Commonwealth Games.
