Mirra Andreeva reaches US Open quarterfinals after overcoming Potapova in three sets

No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva secured her maiden US Open quarterfinal berth with a hard-fought 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 24 seed Anastasia Potapova, overcoming an opening-set deficit and an emotionally difficult finish at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

The 19-year-old French Open champion had not dropped a set in New York before facing Potapova, who now represents Austria and had just eliminated last year's runner-up Amanda Anisimova. The contest stretched beyond two hours and 27 minutes, with neither player holding more than a two-game cushion until the final game.

Tactical Battle on Knife-Edge

Andreeva struggled to find her rhythm early, racking up 22 unforced errors to Potapova's 10 in the opening set. The first set concluded anticlimactically as Andreeva lost her form in the final game, throwing in two double faults and two unforced errors to hand Potapova the set.

"I didn't really know what to do in order to beat her in the first set," Andreeva admitted afterward, adding, "Because I felt she was having answers to everything I was playing".

A renewed commitment to coming forward enabled Andreeva to seize a 2-0 lead in the second set, but Potapova responded with some of her most creative shotmaking, brilliant lobs and sharp backhand angles, to win three consecutive games. Andreeva saved a break point that would have put Potapova up 4-2, then captured a decisive break in the next game when Potapova double-faulted.

The decider opened with three consecutive breaks before Andreeva held serve while saving two more break points to lead 3-1. Potapova kept the scoreboard close, avoiding a 5-2 double-break deficit thanks to a reflexed volley that kissed the net cord and dropped dead on the other side.

Sportsmanship Amid Cruel Ending

As Potapova served to stay in the match at 3-5 in the third set, the Austrian fell while chasing an Andreeva forehand, requiring medical attention to her left knee. Andreeva was at her opponent's side within seconds, helping a limping Potapova to her chair and calling for ice as she underwent treatment.

Though Potapova resumed play with her knee heavily strapped, she was visibly hampered and did not win another point. The pair shared a long embrace after an ending that was ill-befitting of such a hard-fought contest.

"Nastya, she's my good friend," Andreeva said in her on-court interview. "Seeing what a battle we had, and seeing in the last game her fall like this, it's not easy. I can imagine what she's going through and I have goosebumps on my body".

She continued: "It's not the way obviously you want to finish the match, or to see one of your good friends finish the match. I just told her that she's been playing amazing so far, she's been having one of the best seasons, and I'm sure that she's going to come back even stronger because she's a warrior. I think she's even a better fighter than me".

Road to Quarterfinals

The result marks Andreeva's second comeback victory over Potapova in 2026, she also triumphed 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the Linz final in April, and a second straight win over her at the US Open, following a 6-1, 6-3 victory in last year's second round. Andreeva now leads their head-to-head 4-1 and has not lost to Potapova since the first round of Monastir 2022, when she was a 15-year-old making her WTA main-draw debut.

Andreeva has now reached five quarterfinals across three of the four majors, including lifting her first Slam trophy at Roland Garros this year. The teenager will bid for her third Grand Slam semifinal against either No. 4 seed Coco Gauff or No. 14 seed Iva Jovic.

Despite the victory, Andreeva acknowledged the bittersweet nature of the win. "I'm happy with how I was fighting," she said. "But still, I'm pretty sad with how it all ended".

For Potapova, the loss was particularly cruel given she has cut her ranking from No. 97 to No. 25 in the past four months.
