CCTV Watch, Abuse, Distress Call: Chilling Details in Maharashtra Woman's Suicide Two Months After Marriage
Ambernath police are investigating the alleged suicide of 26-year-old Vishakha Tilkar, who died on Tuesday, less than two months after her arranged marriage to Dr. Nitin Tilkar. The case has revealed disturbing allegations of dowry harassment, constant surveillance, and social isolation within her matrimonial home.
Vishakha, a commerce graduate from Pune, married Dr. Tilkar, a BHMS doctor, on April 30. Her family has accused her husband and in-laws of subjecting her to sustained physical and mental abuse over dowry demands and suspicions about her character. According to the complaint, no dowry was given at the time of the wedding, but soon after, her husband and in-laws allegedly began pressuring her family to provide 50 grams of gold. Police said this demand became a recurring source of harassment. Vishakha's father, an autorickshaw driver in Pune, was reportedly unable to meet their demands.
The allegations extend beyond dowry harassment. Vishakha’s family claims she was kept under constant scrutiny inside the house, with CCTV cameras allegedly installed to monitor her movements. Her husband and in-laws were reportedly suspicious of her character and prevented her from interacting with neighbours, effectively isolating her socially. Tensions reportedly escalated on Sunday when Vishakha was seen speaking with a woman living nearby. Her family alleges that she was later assaulted by her husband and in-laws for this interaction.
Following the alleged assault, Vishakha reportedly made a distress call to her parents in Pune, informing them of the harassment she had been enduring. Her parents were planning to travel to Ambernath to intervene, but before they could reach her, Vishakha allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday.
In connection with the case, Shivaji Nagar Police have arrested her husband Dr. Nitin Tilkar, mother-in-law Chhaya Tilkar, and brother-in-law on charges of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. "We have arrested all three accused, and they will be produced before the court today," said Senior Police Inspector Ramesh Patil.
