Sabarimala gold loss probe officer awarded President’s Medal for service

SP S. Sasidharan, the officer leading the investigation into the Sabarimala gold loss cases in Kerala, has been honoured with the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service. The Union government announced the award on Friday, August 14, 2026, as part of the Independence Day honours. Sasidharan is the sole recipient of this prestigious medal from Kerala this year.

Recognition for a Critical Investigation

Sasidharan was appointed by the Kerala High Court in 2025 to probe allegations of gold theft from the Dwarapalaka idols and sanctum sanctorum doorframes at the Sabarimala temple. The case has drawn significant public attention, given the temple’s religious and cultural prominence. The investigation is now in its final stages, with chargesheets in two cases expected to be filed soon, marking a crucial development in the pursuit of justice.

The officer’s track record includes his involvement in the high-profile 2022 Elanthoor human-sacrifice case during his tenure as Deputy Commissioner of the Kochi City Police. His leadership in these sensitive cases has cemented his reputation for diligence and integrity.

Other Medal Recipients from Kerala

In addition to Sasidharan, ten other officers from Kerala Police, Fire and Rescue Services, and Prison and Correctional Services were recognised with President’s Police and Fire Service Medals. Among them, IG Rajpal Meena, SP Binu Ramakrishna Pillai, DSP Ravikumar VR, SP Ujjual Kumar S, Sub-Inspector Jyothish Kumar SL, and DSP Suresh Babu SS received the Medal for Meritorious Service.

From the Fire and Rescue Services, Assistant Station Officers Rajendran Nair and Sebastian Joseph N were also honoured. Meanwhile, Assistant Superintendent Sunil S Kumar and Prison Officer Mohandas MK from the Prison and Correctional Services received the same distinction.
